Pamela Anderson helps pets abandoned after spill

NEW ORLEANS – Most of the roughly 50 abandoned dogs parading under the oaks at New Orleans City Park on Monday were bound for a pet adoption program in Virginia, but two were headed for California with their new owner, actress Pamela Anderson.

"My son was hoping we could take all 50," Anderson said before latching on to her two new charges — two small brown dogs tentatively identified by shelter officials as Chihuahua mixes. Anderson named them in honor of fellow actresses Gina Lollobrigida and Brigitte Bardot.

Anderson helped walk the dogs as part of a news conference calling attention to a program aimed at helping deal with an overflow of abandoned pets since the BP oil spill.

"We couldn't find homes for all the dogs that were being surrendered before the spill," said Bridgette Verdin of the Humane Society of Louisiana, which is working with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and several New Orleans area shelters to find homes for the dogs. Verdin said the spill, which has caused people to lose jobs and income in southeastern Louisiana, only made the existing animal adoption problems worse.

Anderson is the honorary director of PETA. The organization, based in Norfolk, Va., said in a news release that it is working with the Virginia Beach SPCA on an emergency "adopt-a-thon" to find homes for the animals, some of which were given up by people affected by the spill.

Several southeastern Louisiana animal shelters have reported a spike in the number of animals brought in since the April 20 drilling rig explosion that sent millions of gallons of oil spilling into the Gulf. In coastal St. Bernard Parish, for instance, an official reported that 117 animals were given up in June, up by 100 from the 17 reported in June 2009.

Organizers of Monday's event said shelters from the coastal parish of Plaquemines and from other parishes farther inland were represented.

The former "One Tree Hill" star took a break from Hollywood leading up to the birth of her son with boyfriend Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

She and Morgan went public with their relationship last April at the Los Angeles premiere of "The Losers," which Morgan starred in.

Of Morgan, she says: "We're really happy, and we're a very good team. And we got very lucky that our family is what it is."

In keeping with her private ways, Burton wouldn't confirm their son's name or birth date.

She says: "I want to protect them like a mama wolf should."

Burton is in New York to film an episode arc for the USA network show, "White Collar." Her first episode airs Aug. 10 at 9 p.m. ET.

The star was just now sprung free from prison, ushered into a van and taken to the UCLA Medical Center, where she’s to remain 3 months as per court orders, E! Online informs.


Just the other day, rumors were saying that Lindsay had already gotten together an entire team of stylists to have at hand for her release, to make sure she looked her best for the cameras. At the same time, fans and friends rallied outside Lynwood to show their support for the troubled star – and perhaps have a look at her too before being whisked away to rehab. In what is perhaps Lindsay’s most discrete act in a long time, the actress has been let go from prison and is now already in rehab – and no one even knew it.

“Lohan (and her hair extensions) managed to make it through a sojourn at Lynwood’s Century Regional Detention Facility, serving 14 days of a 90-day sentence for a probation violation in a DUI case. Lohan was sprung at 1:35 a.m. Monday, although she managed to elude dozens of camera crews outside. Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department spokesman Steve Whitmore told the assembled masses that Lohan was ushered to rehab in an unmarked van. Not that she had time for teary reunions or fab photo ops...” E! writes.

“Los Angeles Superior Court Marsha Revel had ordered that Lohan report to a treatment facility within 24 hours rather than allow her time to unwind before fulfilling the part of her sentence that’s actually going to last for 90 days. ‘Per court order she has been sent directly to her next destination, which is a treatment center,’ Whitmore said. ‘She is now under the supervision of the L.A. County Probation Department. This concludes her custody. We are done. Thank you all for behaving. We can all go home now’,” the e-zine further says.

As we were also telling you earlier today, though initially destined for Morningside Recovery in Orange County, Lindsay’s court-ordered rehab facility turned out to be the UCLA Medical Center. There, she will receive intense counseling for a reported meth addiction and psychiatric problems, like emotional issues and bi polar disorder.

Only a few days ago, Victoria’s Secret Angel Miranda Kerr was saying she could no longer honor her commitment to Australian department store David Jones because she wanted to take some time off to enjoy her honeymoon to longtime beau now turned husband Orlando Bloom. The moment this transpired into the media, speculation began about whether that was not a shotgun wedding – and it turns out that it was, the Huffington Post says.


Granted, confirmation of this is still pending, but rumors are starting to pick up that Miranda is pregnant, which explains why she and Orlando were in such a hurry to get married only one month after becoming engaged, the tabs are saying. Apparently, that the two are in love and may have wanted to tie the knot without the media knowing their every move is mysteriously out of the question. Moreover, tabs already have half-confirmation of the happy news from friends of the two stars.

Kerr, who just got married to actor Orlando Bloom in a secret ceremony last week, fueled rumors about being with child after refusing to comment on the topic. But now, a source close to Kerr told Us, ‘She’s definitely pregnant... Miranda’s thrilled,’ adding, ‘She’s telling all her friends, mostly other models, about it’,” the Post writes citing sources speaking to Us Weekly.

“Kerr did tell a Sydney newspaper, ‘I have always been very open about wanting to be a mother one day. And I’ve always thought Orlando would be a great dad. I’ve always wanted kids, so someday, eventually, yes, it will happen.’ Maybe sooner than later! Kerr and Bloom have yet to make an official announcement,” the same media outlet further reports.

To add more fuel to the fire that is already burning bright, since returning from her honeymoon, Miranda has been photographed only in loose-fitting clothes, with items placed strategically over her tummy, like the large scarf she has in the photo attached to this article. Nevertheless, if the above is accurate and she and Orlando are, indeed, expecting their first child, confirmation should come soon, before she begins to show.
